Augusta Manufacturing Overview

The company’s manufacturing premises is located in Alrode, south of Johannesburg. The factory handles both tube and sheet products and operates on a 24hr shift.

The production process is organised to handle tube and sheet steel in separate streams, with a press area producing all the components for the manufacturing process, making this operation totally self-sufficient. The factory processes between 50 and 70 tons of steel product a day.

It draws most of its raw material directly from Augusta Steel, receiving deliveries of slit coils, tube and sheet steel daily.

As well as a substantial number of eccentric and hydraulic presses of various tonnages, Uni-Span has acquired newly commissioned machinery at the Alrode factory which include:

  • A bank of automatic band saws which handle the accurate and exact cutting of the tube.
  • Two fully automated Orta Italia thread rolling machines with the capability of rolling tube from 38mm to 100mm in diameter, providing for our Jack and Prop production.
  • SAMCO roll forming lines for the extrusion and punching of steelboard and toeboard profiles services the sheet area.

The production and welding area is fully serviced by an overhead crane system. The welding bays house precision jigs for different products, and components are drawn in from the central stores as required. Welding procedures are carried out in conformance to the standards stipulated by the South African Institute of Welding. All welding equipment is supplied and serviced by Air Liquide and their continual and consistent attention ensures that a high standard of welding is maintained.

Project-specific scaffolding manufactured by Uni-Span can be hard-stamped and colour coded for customers specific requirements. An environmentally friendly electrostatic paint line exists at the Alrode factory providing efficient and top quality painting. The paint line includes an energy-efficient low heat (50°C) drying process.

Production is monitored through internal quality controls on an ongoing basis, to ensure that all products meet established standards for safety and performance. All scaffolding equipment is manufactured in accordance with the South African National Standard SANS 10085-1:2004.

In addition, Uni-Span Manufacturing has aligned its management, manufacturing and quality control systems with the requirements of the ISO 9001 standard for quality management systems.
